Scotts
The Scott's classic reel mower is light, maneuverable, and economical. The business end of this push reel mower is solid, sharp, and everything a reel mower should be, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp steel blades that can be adjusted for nine grass heights with very easy wheel tabs. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, and 20-inch cutting width, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. There's no soft cushion on the handle, which is too bad, but otherwise, the Scotts Classic is a durable, well-constructed, simple device. -
Makita
This one's a bit of a paradox: The do-it-yourselfer might pass by this compressor in favor of an oil-free, no-maintenance model, but it's actually one of the best on the market for the homeowner, hobbyist and weekend warrior. There are three factors that made us form this opinion. First, it's the quietest compressor we've ever encountered. It's a remarkable departure in a genre of tools that normally force you to suspend conversation while it's cycling. The MAC700 puts out 80 decibels, according to the folks at Makita, and when you compare that to the 90 and up you get from most units, that's practically a hum. So we like this for household use, especially in a basement shop.
Next on our list of pluses for the DIY-er is the low-amp draw, and with that, fewer trips to the breaker box and less chance of premature motor failure. The other feature that won us over is the easy-on-the-hand lever handle ball valve that saves your knuckles when you drain the tank. It's also got a really fast cycle, so by the time you take a sip of water, you're ready to work again.
It's made like a champ, with a roll-bar handle that protects your investment, a cast-iron cylinder for durability and an oil sight glass that makes maintenance a breeze.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Porter-Cable
Whether you're using this pinner to fasten or to set a glue-up, you'll be as impressed as we are with its versatility, capability and downright cool features. You'll no longer be a slave to the number of clamps you have for gluing up: one set is all you need. Glue, clamp, fire this pinner, take off the clamps and go on to the next workpiece. The holes it leaves are literally pinholes; in dark woods, they're virtually undetectable. In maple, pine and other light tones, just the tiniest dab of filler will render the hole invisible. It's absolutely perfect for picture frames, slender trim that would split even with an 18-gauge nail, intricate joints and even molding.
Perhaps the neatest feature on this compact, lightweight pinner is the fact that the magazine automatically adjusts for whatever length 23-gauge pin you load, a great time and trouble saver. There's no depth setting to adjust, either - just place and fire for countersinking. The magazine holds a generous 170 pins, and we'll mention this word of caution: The fasteners are marked with arrows to show you how to load them; be sure to follow the arrows or you'll damage your pinner.
The other feature we like is something we actually didn't like at first. Instead of pressing down on the nose to release the firing safety, you instead squeeze the trigger safety with your finger and fire. It's a small learning curve, but once we got used to it, it was second nature.
Like other Porter-Cable nailers, this one's got the visual reload indicator, a nicely shaped ergonomic design and a rubber comfort grip. The exhaust port is in the back to keep you and your workpiece clean and happy, too.
We can't think of any craftsman, whether professional or hobbyist, who wouldn't find a hundred uses for this pinner. It's just a kick to use.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
Amazon.com Product Description
This model from Porter-Cable is one of the newest additions to a vast line of pneumatic nailers. The PIN100 is perfect for hobbies, intricate work, or just using the pin as a "hold-down" while your glue dries. The hole produced with the pin is so small that a wipe with a damp rag makes the hole virtually invisible to the naked eye. Although this unit is small and lightweight, it is not lacking on performance or features. The PIN100 will shoot all 23 gauge pin nails from 1/2-inch to 1-inch in length and features an automatic magazine adjustment to accommodate the length of pin, a feature you won't find on any other pinner, all others have a manual adjustment that takes time to adjust each time you use a different length of pin. The bottom load magazine holds 170 pins and provides a visual signal when the magazine is getting low on pins. The handle utilizes a rubber grip for comfort and better control and the rear exhaust means you won't have to worry about having exhaust blow in your face. Complete with pinner, carrying case, 2,000 3/4-inch pins, oil, 1/4-inch coupler, and wrenches.Technical Details

Porter-Cable
No swirls, no sweat, and a supreme shine every time: That's what this Porter-Cable random-orbit polisher promises - and delivers. The way it's designed, most people will be able to control the tool with one hand, whether it's being used as a polisher or as its original purpose, a random-orbit sander. For those with smaller hands or less hand strength, just attach the auxiliary handle for a superior grip. It's easy to operate, easy to handle and easy on your body ergonomically.
We like that the speed dial is on the back of the body, where it's less likely to get bumped and rev up at the wrong time. The speed range of 2,500 to 6,000 rpm is great for everything from polishing to waxing and buffing and, with the right attachments, sanding, too. It's got a relatively wide orbital swing - more, we think, than most on the market - preventing swirl marks as you work, and vibration in hand is minimal.
Be aware that this polisher comes with just one polishing pad, and you'll need more than that for any polishing/waxing job you undertake. If you are using this as a polisher, you're likely going to be changing out and washing pads frequently, so we recommend picking up the hook-and-loop backer (Porter-Cable's model number is 18001) and coordinating hook-and-loop pads. It will make your polishing life easier.
The car collector, auto enthusiast and exacting hobbyist will love the finish this machine produces with virtually no effort.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
Amazon.com Product Description
Built to last, this rugged 3.7 amp polisher has 100-percent ball bearing construction. The spiral and bevel gearing provides for smooth operation and efficient transfer of power. A variable speed dial sets the orbit rate between 2,500 and 6,000 orbits per minute for precise control. The speed dial is on the end of the motor, out of the way, preventing accidental changing of the speed. A handy slide switch prevents hand fatigue when the unit must be run for the extended periods of time that polishing operations require. The random orbit action of the special six-inch polishing pad provides a smooth, swirl-free finish. An included side handle fits either the left or right side for maximum comfort. For more versatility, this tool can be converted to a five-inch random orbit sander with sanding pad no. 13700 (sold separately).Technical Details

Bosch
We'd wager there have been plenty of times you tried to maneuver a drill/driver into a spot that just wouldn't allow it and wished you had a small, powerful tool that would drive a screw where others just can't go.Here it is. The PS10 is one of the handiest, most powerful little drivers we've laid hands on. It's impressively powered by "litheon," which Bosch calls "the industry's most advanced lithium-ion battery technology." We can attest that there's absolutely no lag in power, and the run time is great - more than 100 drives per charge. Recharge time is just 30 minutes, so you should never have to wait for a battery.
The best feature, of course, is the clever design. Instead of a pistol grip like most drivers, this one has a sturdy tool body and an articulating head that has five detents, letting you set it however you need it. The head itself is just 3-1/2 inches long, so it's no struggle at all to slip it into tight spaces such as in between studs, under-sink cabinets, between joists and other tricky situations. If it's length you need, just flip the head to the vertical position and it's literally like having a screwdriver at your fingertips; it's not quite a foot long at its full length.
It uses ¼-inch hex bits, and they're easy to change. We would have liked to see some on-board bit storage, but that's a small point. The two-finger trigger is comfortable, and it's quite sensitive, so take care not to strip your fasteners while you're on the learning curve.
In all, we're really pleased with this little driver, and we think there's a place for it in just about every toolbox. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Rubbermaid
This is the perfect system to use for garage storage, where wooden or metal cabinets would be likely to get dinged by yard tools, cars, and so on.The cabinet is easy to assemble-you don't need tools to do it, though a soft mallet may be helpful. As you expect with Rubbermaid products, the cabinet is almost indestructible. The one complaint I had is that when I put mine together in my basement the unevenness of the floor caused a slight misalignment of the doors. This was easily corrected with a shim placed under the front edge.
Notable plusses include lightweight construction that makes relocating the cabinets easy and an amazingly small footprint for what it can hold. If you intend to store toxic items, you may want to consider ordering a set of locks from the manufacturer.
Looking for affordable storage for your basement or garage? This is the unit for you.--Josh Dettweiler

BLACK & DECKER/DEWALT
What a super compact sizeit looks like a toy and drills like a beast. At just about 3-1/2 pounds, it's like a feather to hoist overhead, but there is absolutely no sacrifice in torque, delivering 350 inch-pounds. We like the speed range choices, from 0 to 400 rpm in low gear and 0 to 1,400 rpm on high. The keyless chuck operates smoothly, and you get a flawlessly secure bit grip every time with the ratcheting mechanism. The grip is comfortable, and the whole tool feels supremely balanced for all-day comfort. It would be perfect for cabinet installers and HVAC ductwork because of its compact size, but we also think it's a great choice for the homeowner, especially those with smaller hands. DeWalt construction is rugged and durable, so you'll have this little worker around for years and years.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
