The truth is, this drill/driver is a kick to use. When we wrapped our hands around it, it just felt goooood. Hitachi's hot new tool design makes this drill look like something out of a sci-fi flick, but it's got down-to-earth power and torque that, quite frankly, surprised us.Pop a bit into the 1/2-inch keyless chuck and admire the two speed ranges of 0-400 in low and 0-1,200 in high, and even tough jobs are no match for its whopping 400 inch-pounds of torque and 22-position clutch. For all that power, it's pleasantly light, and if we had a couple hours of overhead work to do, we'd be happy to be using this. We're even impressed with the flashlight - it's plenty bright and stands solidly on its own. Batteries (not one, but two) charge up quick in the charger, and everything fits neatly into the carrying case. This is a nice combination set for the homeowner, do-it-yourselfer and the construction professional. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

If you're building decks or hanging drywall, this driver makes the job a whole lot easier. A no-load speed of 0 to 900 rpm and 0 to 2,900 rpm couples with a maximum torque of 180 inch-pounds for serious fastener driving. All of DeWalt's screwdrivers—this one included—have a "dead" front spindle. The clutches are held apart by light spring pressure so the drilling clutch can rotate without involving the driven clutch and accessory. Just apply pressure to engage the clutch and you're driving. We really like the depth setter on this driver; you just turn the collar and precise adjustments are made. Each "click" of the collar is a change of .007 inch, and a full revolution changes your depth setting .083 inch. Changing the bit holder is just a little sticky, but if you grasp the bit holder with pliers, it's quick and easy. There's a neat groove designed into the body of the tool, and we followed DeWalt's advice for applying a little more pressure to a driving job. Instead of holding it like a regular drill, slide your thumb and index finger along the side of the tool near the top and squeeze the trigger with your middle and ring fingers. No workshop or tool box is complete without at least one dependable and powerful cordless drill/driver. Like most of Skil's drill/drivers, the 2887-07 3/8-inch keyless chuck drill/driver is just that. The feature that distinguishes it from the rest of the Skill drills is the built-in work light located on the battery compartment This is a useful feature for illuminating the working surface in narrow, closed-in or darkened areas. It has a two-speed gear box that allows the user to shift from high speed drilling to high torque for driving screws or bolts. The gear change lever is located on top of the tool housing above the two-finger variable speed trigger. The forward/reverse switch on this drill is located just above the trigger so that you can switch direction without changing your grip, and there is a forward/reverse indicator light on top of the housing. There is a built-in bit storage compartment on top of the housing. Especially handy is the built-in bit index No more guessing at which bit is needed for which screw. Simply place a screw in the index and you'll find the bit size you will need. The 2887-05 also comes with a removable side handle for added two-fisted leverage when drilling or driving on high torque.The drill/driver is powered by an 18-volt Ni-Cad battery which gives the user superior power and extended battery life.
